The Attic Angels hired the first visiting nurse in Madison in 1908. They continued to fund and manage the Visiting Nurse Service until 1951 when it became a separate entity. Home Health United began in 1986 as a cooperative effort between Reedsburg Area Medical Center, Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital and St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo to provide nursing, therapy, aide, and social services in the home. Hospice services began in 1987. In 1989 St. Mary’s Hospital became a supporting hospital.
That was also the year HHU began offering licensed and certified hospice services covered by Medicare and other insurances. Five years later, HHU purchased Nichols Home Medical Supply in Reedsburg. HHU began serving patients in the Janesville area in 1996. The agency merged with the Visiting Nurse Service in Dane County in 1999.
