General Inpatient & Respite Services

General Inpatient Services

General Inpatient (GIP) Care for symptom management is a valuable tool that allows hospice staff to provide clinical services to a degree that cannot typically be provided in a patient’s home. GIP is the level of care for patients who cannot comfortably remain in a residential setting and require skilled nursing care around the clock to maintain comfort.

While HHU successfully manages pain and symptoms at home for 96% of our hospice patients, there are times when GIP care is the best short term solution. GIP care allows patients to stay in their communities while still receiving the higher level of care they need.

When is GIP Appropriate?

If the hospice and the caregiver, working together, are no longer able to provide the necessary skilled nursing and pain and symptom management care in the individual’s home, then the individual may be eligible for a short term general inpatient level of care.

Where can GIP be Provided?

GIP can be provided in a Medicare-certified hospice, hospital or skilled nursing facility that meets the conditions of providing inpatient care. Home Health United has partnered with many community facilities for GIP care, including:

Respite Services

There may come a time while on hospice services that a patient’s caregivers need some time away from the tasks of care giving. Caregiver stress can lead to physical and emotional distress that can interfere with the ability to provide care.

Hospice respite care programs are designed to provide temporary, short-term assistance in caring for a hospice patient.  It is intended to allow the caregivers to take some time away from the patient, and even the patient some time away from the caregivers, to allow them to emotionally recharge and become better prepared to handle the normal day-to-day challenges of caregiving.

The word "respite" means rest or relief.  Respite care is a gift of time for rest, given by professionals, other family members or volunteers to the primary caregivers. Respite care comes in many forms and at a variety of locations; Home Health United has partnered with many community facilities for respite care.
